Scales Family Genealogy

Julius Scales (1814-~1911) & Charlotte Smith (1825 -?)

My research on the descendants of Julius Scales is a work in progress. From records we see that Julius was 31 at the time of Senora Scales birth; his oldest recorded child. However, DNA suggests that he had children older than Senora who remained behind in Alabama and were not brought to Washington, Texas by the en-slavers.

I have chosen not to include those children until I can do further research. Just realize that this list is inconclusive.

Per the 1900 Census. Julius and Lottie state that they have been married for 40 years. This places the year of their marriage at 1860, five years before emancipation. Surprising, in the census, Lottie states that she had 6 children born and 6 were still living.

That would not be an issue if it were not for the fact that there are EIGHT children.

This is where we turn to DNA. I can confirm genetic relationships via DNA for five siblings consisting of: Senora, Richard, Charity, Nelson and Williams Scales.

Richard Scales & Delsia Williams (1849-1925)

Summary

When Richard Scales was born in May 1849 in Mississippi, his father, Julius, was 35 and his mother, Charlotte, was 24. He married Delsia Williams in Washington, Texas on December 31, 1869. They had ten children in 21 years. He died on October 29, 1925, in Washington, Texas, at 76.

After his older sister, Senora, Richard is the 2nd child per paper records that we “know” of. However, was Richard’s mother, Charlotte, the only birth mother for Julius’s children? Especially seeing that slaves were sometimes used as studs in slavery. Without any evidence, we can only speculate. We do know that Richard named his children after his sisters Phyllis and Mary, his father and brother William and another after his Aunt Tempe.

Mary Scales (1852)

Summary

We don’t know a lot about Mary other than she was included as the oldest child living with her parents in the 1870 census. Her age is listed as 18, placing her as an adult. By the 1880 census, she was most likely married. However, since Mary is a common name, tracing any marriages for her has proven challenging. I hope that a future DNA test will give us more information.

The names of Nelson and Senora, with its derivatives, permeate through our generations. There are Senoras, Senorias, and even Lenoras. And while we are on the subject, Nelson’s mother, Charlotte, went by the nickname Lottie. And our family has several Lotties as well.
