Nelson Winters Sr & Gertrude Yarbrough (1887-1792)

Summary

When Nelson Winters was born on June 27, 1887, in Texas, his father, James, was 44 and his mother, Senora, was 42. He married Gertrude M Yarbrough on Christmas Eve, December 24, 1907, in Washington, Texas. They had eight children in 11 years. The youngest of the 12, he was given the nickname, Papa Bud. “Bud” was an 1800 term of endearment which meant, the youngest child. His wife Gertrude was nicknamed, “Mama Gurt”, although over time, some of her grandchildren referred to her as “Mama Gate”. In truth, some didn’t know her real name.
 
The couple moved from rural Washington, Texas to Galveston in 1933.  There, they raised their grandson, Edward Spiller, the third child of their youngest daughter Willie.  Edward recollects memories of how Papa Bud was strict, and Mama Gurt would have to save him from getting whippings plenty of times. One time Papa Bud was going to discipline him, so Edward ran and hid  under the house. Papa Bud then told Edward’s older sister, Margaret to go and retrieve him. Fortunately for Edward,  Mama Gurt intervened and commanded her grand daughter to leave him alone. Let ’em be! Edward was spared once again. This was not always the case.
 
Papa Bud and Mama Gurt grew their own food, but would go to the local market about once a month or so. Then Edward would have to hitch the mules, and wait for Papa Bud to go and return. 
 
In addition to working as a laborer on a farm, Papa Bud was a barber and cut hair in his living Room. Mama Gurt was a washwoman and washed clothes to make money on the side. Papa Bud passed a year after Mama Gurt on May 1, 1972, in Texas City, Texas, at the age of 84. He and Mama Gurt are buried in Galveston, Texas.
